Benefits of Ayurvedic Medication

Ayurvedic Medication is prescribed from the perspective of bio-individuality. The mind, body, and spirit connection are deeply involved in treatment; therefore, treatment involves the use of medicines as well as lifestyle practices, dietary changes, meditation, yoga, and more. Ayurveda employs a group of cleansing procedures known as Panchakarma - which can treat the individual and condition from a very deep level pin pointing the root cause, rather than just on the surface of symptomatic management. Just like most modern medicines, Ayurvedic medicines are prepared as tablets, capsules, syrups, decoctions, powders, oils, etc. These medicines are prepared using traditional Ayurvedic pharmaceutical methods and are always by the standards of GMPs (The industry gold standard known as “Good Manufacturing Practice”). Most of these medicines are prepared from medicinal herbs that are historically and scientifically known for their multitude of health benefits. For example, a common Ayurvedic herb used today known as Ashwagandha has proven to be useful in conditions such as hypothyroidism (1), anxiety (2), stress and depression (3), dry mouth syndrome (4), heart palpitations (5), osteoarthritis (6), sexual dysfunction (7), OCD (8), bipolar disorder (9), insomnia (10) and more.

Ayurveda also uses various minerals (together with herbs) in treatment. These minerals are processed into nanoparticles (traditionally referred to as “Bhasma’s”) (see clinical study - 1) to increase their bioavailability and potency while also drastically reducing their toxicity enabling them to be used therapeutically without any harmful effects. This area of therapeutics is referred to as “Rasa-shastra”.

Nanomedicine is the relevance of nanotechnology in the area of healthcare, diagnosis, cure, and prevention of disease which is relatively a new field of science and technology. While nanotechnology is newly emerging in western medical sciences, Ayurveda has used nanomedicine for thousands of years. Ayurvedic medicines and therapies are becoming the latest trend because of their safety and varied health benefits. Integration of Ayurveda and nanotechnology may provide highly effective medicines to treat various life-threatening diseases such as cancer (2), anemia (3), HIV (4), metabolic syndrome (5), etc.

Ayurveda also applies concepts such as Chrono pharmacology to appropriately time the administration of medicines in relation to circadian rhythms. This exhibits a more significant therapeutic effect and can greatly enhance the rate and efficacy of healing. For example, when treating low testosterone, medicine should be administered the night before as this hormone is formed in the early hours of the morning. This way, the body can absorb the medicines still in circulation at those hours. Given the complexity of Ayurvedic treatment, one should always follow the guidance of an Ayurvedic doctor as they are capable of assessing the various avenues of treatment that should be adopted for the best treatment outcome. Simply purchasing Ayurvedic herbs and using them in the way that has been instructed on the bottle is not going to yield the same results. Ayurveda is not a “one size fits all” medical science.
